ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The No. 6 ranked Lewis women's volleyball remained unbeaten in GLVC play and extend their winning streak to 10 with a four set victory over Illinois Springfield on Tuesday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 16-1, 5-0 GLVC while the Prairie Stars drop to 12-5, 4-1 GLVC.
UIS built an early six point lead in the opening set and led by as many as eight in the frame. Lewis closed the deficit to four but wasn't able to get any closer as the Prairie Stars went onto win 25-18. UIS hit .308 (10 kills-2 errors-26 total attacks) while the Flyers hit .235 (14-6-34).
Lewis used a 5-0 run midway through the second stanza to build a 12-7 lead. UIS fought back to within 19-18 after a kill from Hannah Nicolaisen forcing the Flyers to take a timeout. Out of the break Lewis closed out the set scoring six of the last seven points to win 25-19 and even the match at a set apiece.
Lewis never trailed in the third set leading by as many as 10 at 21-11 after a block by
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York). The Prairie Stars then ran off seven straight points to cut the lead to three. The Flyers scored three of the next five points to grab a 24-20 lead on a kill from
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg). The Stars fought off one set point but not a second as Schlechte knocked home her sixth kill of the set to give Lewis a 25-21 victory.
The Flyers built a six-point cushion midway through set four but UIS refused to go quietly responding with a 9-4 run to get within 19-18 after a kill from Megan Krasowski. Lewis fought off the run closing the match scoring six of the final seven points to win 25-19.
Preuss finished with a season-high 20 kills to lead three Flyers in double figures.
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) added 13 and Schlechte finished with 11.
Mikah Freppon (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) recorded 48 assists while
Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) led the way with 19 digs.
As a team, Lewis hit .264 for the contest while holding UIS to a .128 hitting percentage. The Flyers finished the match with 11 total blocks.
Lewis is back in action this Friday (Oct. 11) traveling to Indianapolis to take on the Greyhounds at 6 p.m. (CDT).
