MIDLAND, Mich. - Behind 28 points and nine rebounds from
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston), the Lewis University women's basketball team defeated Northwood 72-64 Saturday in its road opener at Riepma Arena. The Flyers moved to 2-1 with the win, while the Timberwolves fell to 0-3.
After Northwood opened the game with a three-pointer, the Flyers responded with 12 straight points after a three-point play by Hinders. They built the lead to 10 at 16-6 before settling for an 18-13 lead after the first quarter.
It was an evenly played second quarter with the two teams trading baskets throughout the quarter as Lewis held a 30-24 lead at the break.
The Timberwolves climbed to within two points twice in the third quarter at 32-30 and 34-32, but the Flyers were able to go on a 12-4 run to take a 46-34 lead, thanks to three-pointers from
Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva). The Flyers led 50-45 after three quarters.
Northwood completed an 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 50-50 with 9:15 left in the game.
Reilly Olmstead (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) stopped the momentum with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to regain the lead for Lewis.
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) followed that with a pair of three-pointers with layups by Hinders and
Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) sandwiched in between as the Flyers reeled off 13 straight points in less than three minutes to take a 63-50 lead with 6:12 left in the game.
The Flyers maintained at least an eight-point lead the rest of the way, building as large as a 15-point advantage at 72-57.
Hinders shot 13-of-17 from the field (76.5 percent) and added five assists. Glatczak tallied 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks, Williams had eight points and five assists and Hart added seven assists.
Lewis shot 50 percent (28-of-56) from the field and hit eight three-pointers, with six of those coming in the second half. The Flyers limited Northwood to 24-of-64 shooting (37.5 percent), although the Timberwolves did shoot 12-for-25 (48 percent) from beyond the arc. The Flyers won the rebounding battle 39-33.
Lewis continues its trip in Michigan Sunday with a game in Allendale against Grand Valley State. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
