ALLENDALE, Mich. – Lewis' women's basketball team dropped a 72-57 decision at third ranked Grand Valley State on Sunday afternoon in Allendale, Mich. The Flyers fall to 2-2 on the season while the Lakers improve to 3-0.
Lewis fell behind 7-0 to start the contest but then outplayed Grand Valley the rest of the quarter outscoring them 15-6 to take a two-point lead into the second quarter.
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and
Reilly Olmstead (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) had four points each in the quarter while
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) added three.
The Lakers opened the second quarter on a 13-4 run to regain its seven-point lead on a three-pointer from Taryn Taugher midway through the second quarter.
Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) brought the Flyers to within four with a three-pointer a minute later but Grand Valley scored the final eight points of the half to take a 34-22 lead into the locker room.
Lewis shot 32 percent (9-for-28) from the floor in the first two quarters, was 2-for-9 from three and outrebounded the Lakers 18-to-17. Williams, Olmstead and
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) had four points each to lead the Flyers in scoring.
Grand Valley extended its lead to 14 points to begin the second half but Lewis began chipping away at the deficit getting it to seven on a three-pointer from Williams with 6:14 to go in the third quarter.
The Lakers extended their lead back to double digits thanks to an 8-2 run but the Flyers responded to that run with a 7-0 run of its own to cut the lead to 50-44 with 0:40 left in the quarter. Victoria Hedemark gave Grand Valley an eight point lead heading into the final 10 minutes with a layup with 0:07 left.
Lewis trailed by 14 with 5:23 to go in the final frame before cutting the lead in half with seven straight points in the span of 2:16 to make the score 62-55 on two free throws from Williams.
That would be the closest they got though as the Lakers responded with 10 straight points over the next 2:10 to grab its largest lead of the game at 72-55.
Lindsay Harrison (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) scored her first collegiate basket in the closing seconds to make it a 15-point margin.
The Flyers finished the game shooting 36 percent (21-for-59) from the floor, was 5-of-17 from three and shot 91 percent at the foul line. Hinders scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half to go along with nine rebounds. Williams finished with 11 points while Olmstead and
Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) added nine points apiece.
Maddie Dailey led all scorers with 20 points in the contest and was one of four Grand Valley players to reach double figures. The Lakers shot 46 percent (27-for-59) from the field, was 9-for-28 from three and shot 60 percent at the foul line.
Lewis continues its five-game road trip with a trip to Ohio on Thursday taking on eighth ranked Ashland University at 4:30 p.m. (CST).
