Flyers Upset No. 19 Ferris State For First Win Of Season

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Adam Pischke's (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) layup with 0:02 left gave Lewis' men's basketball team a 79-77 upset win over 19th ranked Ferris State on Saturday afternoon in Big Rapids, Mich. The Flyers picked up their first win of the season to improve to 1-3 while the Bulldogs fall to 8-1.

Lewis trailed 19-15 with 12:20 left in the first half before seizing control with a 14-0 run to build a 29-19 lead. Artese Stapleton (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) scored the first seven points in the run hitting a three and back-to-back layups. Marco Pettinato (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) added three while Jared Crutcher (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) and Pischke had two points each in the run.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to eight but the Flyers countered with an 11-5 run to build a 14-point lead with 3:41 left in the half. Ferris cut the lead to single digits again at 40-32 but the Flyers closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 47-34 lead into the locker room.

Lewis shot 47 percent from the field in the first half and was even better from beyond the arc making 8-of-16 attempts. Anthony D'Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) led the Flyers with 10 points while Stapleton and Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) had seven points apiece.

The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 15-6 run to cut the Lewis lead to 53-49 with 13:36 to play. The Flyers responded with an 11-3 run to extend its lead back to double digits on a jumper by Bell with 9:45 left in the contest.

Ferris State refused to go away though cutting Lewis' lead to 75-74 on a jumper by Walt Kelser with 0:55 remaining. The Flyers answered on the other end as Bell hit a layup on the ensuing possession to make it 77-74 with 0:27 to go.

Kelser tied the game with a three-pointer with 0:16 left. After a timeout, Pischke drove the lane and hit a layup to put Lewis in front for good. Bell sealed the victory stealing the ball from Michael Peterson as time expired.

The Flyers were held to 40 percent shooting in the second half and were just 5-of-16 from three but still finished the game shooting 44 percent (29-for-66) from the field and was 13-for-32 (41 percent) from three and. They struggled at the foul line however shooting only 57 percent.

D'Avanzo finished with a game-high 22 points to lead four Lewis players in double figures. Bell added 14 while Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) had 11 and Pishcke finished with 10 points. D'Avanzo also had eight rebounds and Pischke had six assists.

The Bulldogs shot 41 percent (26-for-63) from the floor for the contest and were just 5-of-22 from three (23 percent). They shot 80 percent (20-for-25) at the foul line and outrebounded Lewis 45-to-37. Peterson led four FSU players in double figures with 17 points.

The Flyers conclude their roadtrip on Monday traveling to Findlay, Ohio to take on the Oilers at 6 p.m. (CST).
