Flyers Rally But Fall At Wisconsin-Parkside

Story Links

KENOSHA, Wis. – Lewis' women's basketball team overcame a 20-point first half deficit but ultimately fell to Wisconsin-Parkside 82-63 on Wednesday evening at DeSimone Gymnasium in Kenosha, Wis. The Flyers fall to 4-5 while the Rangers improve to 4-6.

UWP was hot in the opening quarter shooting 65 percent (11-for-17) from the field and was 4-of-4 from three as it built a 29-11 lead by the end of the stanza. Lewis struggled on the offensive end making only 4-of-15 shots and turned the ball over six times.

The Rangers extended their lead to 20 points on a jumper from Aina Cabrero Sinol with 6:03 left in the second quarter. The Flyers chipped away at the lead thanks to a 14-6 run over the next five minutes to get within eight on a layup from Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva). Carolina Rahkonen extended the lead back to double digits hitting a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to give Parkside a 39-28 lead at the half.

The two sides exchanged baskets over the first four minutes of the third quarter before Lewis went on a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to tie the game on a free throw by Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) with 1:22 left in the quarter.

However, the Rangers responded scoring the final five points of the frame to regain the momentum.

The Flyers cut the lead to three on a jumper in the paint from Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) early in the fourth quarter. That would be the closest Lewis got as Parkside seized control with a 15-2 run over a four minute stretch.

It seemed there was a lid on the Flyer basket in the final quarter as they were just 2-of-17 from the field while the Rangers shot 63 percent (10-for-16) in the frame.

Lewis was held to 34 percent (23-for-67) shooting in the contest, was 3-of-21 from three but did shoot 78 percent at the foul line. Hinders led all scorers with 28 points and also had 12 rebounds while Black added 10 points.

The Rangers finished the contest hitting 53 percent (33-for-62) of their shots, were 10-of-24 from three and they outrebounded the Flyers 36-to-31. Alyssa Nelson led three players in double figures with 24 points while Taylor Stephen and Rahkonen added 18 and 12 points respectively.

Lewis returns to the court on Thursday, Jan. 2, when it resumes GLVC play traveling to Indianapolis to take on UIndy at 4:30 p.m. (CST).
