ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' men's basketball team extended its winning streak to six with an 84-57 win over Lake Superior State on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena.
Artese Stapleton (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) led four Flyers in double figures with a career-high 17 points.
Lewis (6-3) scored the first seven points to begin the contest and held the Lakers (5-6) without a field goal for nearly the first seven minutes.
The Flyers led by 10 after a pair of
Jared Crutcher (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) free throws with 13:07 left in the half. LSSU responded with a quick five points to cut Lewis' lead in half two minutes later.
The Flyers extended their lead back to double digits on a bucket from
Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) but the Lakers continued hanging around and trailed 29-22 with 3:48 left in the half.
Lewis closed the half strong scoring 12 of the final 16 points to take a 41-26 halftime lead.
The Flyers shot 43 percent (13-for-30) from the floor, was 5-of-8 from three and shot 63 percent from the foul line.
Anthony D'Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) and
Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) had 11 points apiece to lead Lewis.
The Flyer defense held Lake Superior State to just 29 percent (8-for-28) shooting which included 2-of-14 from three. Jackson Schrameyer led the Lakers with nine points off the bench while Justin Fischer added six.
Lewis extend its lead to 21 points six minutes into the second half but would go cold over a four minute stretch which allowed LSSU to cut the lead to 11 even with less than 10 minutes to play.
Bell silenced the run hitting a three-pointer from the left wing on the ensuing possession to extend the lead to 14 points.
The Lakers wouldn't get closer than 13 points the rest of the way as Lewis outscored them 24-7 over the final 7:12 to pull away with the victory.
The Flyers finished the game shooting 48 percent (29-for-60) from the floor, was 8-of-16 from three and shot 75 percent at the foul line. Lewis dominated on the glass outrebounding LSSU 46-to-30. 12 different Flyers scored in the contest with Stapleton, D'Avanzo, Bell and Oliver all reaching double figures.
Lewis returns to the court on Thursday, Jan. 2, when it resumes GLVC play with a trip to Indianapolis for a 6:30 p.m. (CST) tip.
