Lewis Women’s Hoops Opens 2020 With Two Road Contests

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team is back in action with a pair of conference games to open up 2020. The Flyers travel to Indianapolis on Thursday to take on the Greyhounds and then on Saturday head to Louisville to take on Bellarmine.

Last Time Out – Lewis fell to 4-5 on the season with an 82-63 loss at Parkside in its final game of 2019 on Wed., Dec. 18. Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) led the way with 28 points and 12 rebounds in the contest. The Rangers shot over 53 percent from the field in the contest.

Moving On Up – Hinders moved up to 16th all-time in school history in scoring after her 28-point performance at Parkside. She has currently scored 1,125 points in her career and is two points behind Brenda Wegrzyn (1991-95) for 15th all-time.

About UIndy – The Greyhounds (8-1, 1-0 GLVC) are off to their best start since 2012 when they started 11-1 on their way to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Laura Thomas leads the Hounds in scoring with 14.7 points per game while Dasia Evans and Emma Benoit are averaging 12.6 and 10.1 points per contest respectively. Benoit leads the team in rebounding with 7.9 rebounds per game.

Flyers vs. Hounds – Lewis leads the all-time series with UIndy 41-34 dating back to the 1980s. The Flyers have dominated the series since 2013 winning 13 of the last 14 contests. The Flyers won both meetings against the Greyhounds last season.

About Bellarmine – The Knights enter Thursday's contest against Illinois Springfield with a record of 5-3, 0-1 GLVC. Bellarmine has been tough at Knights Hall this year winning five of six contests. The Knights have won four of their last five contests with the lone loss coming at Indianapolis on Dec. 2. Breia Torrens leads the team in scoring with 12.8 points per contest while Tasia Jeffries is contributing 10.5 points per outing. Ally Mayhaus leads the team in rebounding with 4.8 rebounds per game.

Flyers vs. Knights – Saturday's contest marks the 71st meeting all-time between Lewis and Bellarmine with the Knights holding a 40-30 advantage in the series. The Flyers nine-game winning streak in the series was snapped by Bellarmine in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament last season.

Up Next – Lewis returns home for the first time in 2020 hosting Rockhurst next Thursday (Jan. 9) at 5:30 p.m. The homestand continues next Saturday against William Jewell at 1 p.m.
