Kelliher and Lockett Carry Lewis Women’s Basketball Past Bellarmine

The duo combined to score 55 points on Thursday.

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) combined to score 55 points in Lewis women's basketball 71-60 win over Bellarmine on Thursday night at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers, ranked 12th in this week's D2SIDA Media Poll and 18th in the WBCA Coaches Poll, improved to 19-2 overall and 10-1 in the GLVC while the Knights fell to 10-9 and 4-7 in league play.

Kelliher and Lockett combined to connect on 22 of Lewis' 29 field goals in the contest and also teamed up with eight rebounds and six assists.

The Flyers got off to a slow start trailing 10-4 with 3:02 left in the opening quarter but outscored Bellarmine 9-6 the rest of the stanza to cut the deficit to three by the quarter break. Lewis shot 46 percent in the frame but turned the ball over six times.

The Flyers opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run to take the lead for good with nine straight points coming from Lockett. Bellarmine cut the lead to two on three different occasions but Lewis was able to take a six-point lead into halftime as Lockett scored the final four points of the half.

She led all scorers with 15 points, 13 of those in the second quarter, on 7-of-9 shooting.

The Flyers kept their foot on the gas beginning the third quarter doubling up Bellarmine 10-5 to extend its halftime lead to 42-31 on a layup by Kelliher with 6:39 left in the frame. The Knights answered with six straight points to cut the lead to five and got as close as four before Lewis closed out the quarter scoring nine of the final 13 points.

The Flyers held Bellarmine to just four points over the first seven-plus minutes of the final quarter to extend their lead to 15 with 2:51 to play on a basket by Kelliher. The Knights wouldn't get closer than 11 points the rest of the way as Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) scored Lewis' final six points of the game.

The Flyers shot 54.7 percent (29-for-53) from the field in the contest and was 13-of-16 from the foul line. They outrebounded Bellarmine 38-to-25 and had a 54-to-35 advantage in points in the paint.

Kelliher led all scorers with 34 points and is now 23 points shy of becoming the all-time leading scorer in GLVC history. Angie Hupfer from Saint Joseph's College is the current record holder with 2,510 points. Lockett added 21.

The Knights shot 40 percent (24-for-60) from the floor in the contest, was 4-of-18 from downtown and shot 62 percent at the foul line. Mikayla Berry led Bellarmine with 12 points off the bench while Breia Torrens finished with 11 points.

Lewis continues its four-game homestand on Saturday hosting Southern Indiana at 1 p.m.
