Lewis Baseball Drops Series Finale to Missouri-St. Louis, 5-4

ST. LOUIS – Lewis' baseball team dropped the finale of its three-game series at Missouri-St. Louis, 5-4 on Monday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. The Flyers fall to 7-5 on the season and 2-1 in the GLVC while the Tritons improve to 1-12, 1-2 GLVC.

Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said Monday's game came down to missed opportunities.

"We left a lot of baserunners on and just weren't able to get any big hits when we needed them," he said. "Credit UMSL, they overcame some of their mistakes and played like a team desperate for their first win and we lacked the killer instinct needed to grind this one out. I believe we will learn from this and bounce back."

The Tritons struck first scoring an unearned run in the home half of the first. Jacob Stoker led off the game with a single up the middle. He went to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a groundout to first and scored on a dropped fly ball in center.

The Flyers scored four runs on two hits and two errors in the fourth to take the lead. Ryan Schefske (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) led off the inning with a walk. With one out, Andrew Tenison (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) singled to right center to put runners on first and second. With two outs, Dalton Crowder (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) reached on a dropped throw at first to extend the inning. Lewis scored its first two runs on a dropped fly ball by the third baseman to score Schefske and Tenison. A stolen base and a walk loaded the bases for Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) who singled to right center to drive in O'Brien and Crawford.

UMSL tied the game with three runs in the sixth on three hits. Andrew Hayden and Mitchel Becher each had RBI singles in the inning. The Tritons regained the lead in the seventh on Stoker's home run down the left field line with two out in the inning.

The Flyers put the tying and go-ahead runs on base with one out in the ninth but they were left stranded as back-to-back flyouts to left ended the game.

Lewis outhit the Tritons 7-5 in the contest with Cavalieri and Crowder recording two hits each. Robert Talarico (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) took the loss in relief allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.

The Flyers are back in action on Tuesday taking on Maryville in a non-conference game beginning at 1 p.m. in O'Fallon, Mo.
