OSCEOLA, Fla. – Lewis' softball team concluded its trip to Florida with a pair of wins on Wednesday in Osceola, Fla. The Flyers defeated Post 4-2 in their first game and then rallied for a 4-3 walk-off win over Salem in their second game. Lewis improves to 7-11 on the season.
Game 1 – Lewis 4 Post 2
The Flyers struck first in their contest against the Eagles with a run in the first. With one out,
Maddy Beck (Racine, Wis./Case) homered to left center. Lewis added to its lead scoring three times in the fifth. With one out,
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) doubled to left center and then advanced to third on
Morgan Weber's (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) single to center. Weber moved to second on a groundout from Beck.
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) made it 2-0 with a single to score Lofthouse. Weber went to third on the play and Taylor took second on the throw.
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) drove in both runs with a single to left to make it 4-0.
Post (3-4) scored a run in the sixth on a fielder's choice and groundout and another in the seventh to make it 4-2. The Eagles had a chance to win the game loading the bases with one out but Shaw got back-to-back groundouts to end the game.
The Flyers finished with 11 hits in the contest and were led by Beck, Taylor and Shaw with two apiece. Shaw got the win in the circle as she tossed a complete game allowing two runs on eight hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.
Game 2 – Lewis 4 Salem 3
Salem (1-7) struck first in the second game of the day scoring twice in the first inning on a two-run home run off the bat of Christine Bombardiere.
Lewis got a run back in the home half of the third when
Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) reached on an error by the first baseman that allowed Taylor to score.
The Tigers regained their two run lead in the fifth. Casey Moritz scored on a groundout to short to make it 3-1.
The Flyers won the game scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh. The first three batters of the inning reached.
Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) singled to right to drive in Taylor to cut the Salem lead to 3-2. With one out and runners on second and third,
Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate) singled to center to drive in
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) and Kavalauskas to end the game.
Lewis outhit the Tigers 10-6 and was led by Taylor with two while Kavalauskas and Brennan had two hits apiece. Sanders picked up the win in relief of
Taylor Boelte (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah). Sanders retired all six hitters she faced in her two innings of work to improve to 4-5 on the season.
The Flyers are back in action on Saturday as they open Great Lakes Valley Conference action as they travel to St. Louis for a doubleheader against Missouri-St. Louis beginning at 12 p.m.
