LEBANON, Ill. – Lewis' softball team extended its winning streak to four with a sweep of Missouri-St. Louis 2-1 and 8-1 on Saturday at Bearcat Field in Lebanon, Ill. The games were played at McKendree due to Missouri-St. Louis' field being deemed unplayable. The Flyers improve to 9-11 overall and 2-0 in the GLVC while the Tritons fall to 11-13, 0-2 in GLVC play.
Game 1 – Lewis 2, Missouri-St. Louis 1
Lewis took the lead two batters into the as
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) led off the game with a double and scored on
Maddy Beck's (Racine, Wis./Case) single to right.
UMSL evened the score in the home half of the first. Reagan Osborn led off with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Chelsea Martinez's two-out double to left.
The game remained deadlocked until the fifth when the Flyers regained the lead.
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) led off the inning with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Weber's single up the middle.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) held the Triton bats in check retiring the final 10 hitters she faced to even her record at 5-5. Sanders went the distance allowing one run on one hit with five strikeouts and two walks.
Lewis had seven hits in the contest with Weber leading the way with two while Beck,
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew),
Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate), Sanders and Lofthouse had a hit each.
Game 2 – Lewis 8, Missouri-St. Louis 1
The Flyers jumped on top with a run in the second. With one out, Brennan walked, went to second on
Cassie Shaw's (Moline, Ill./Moline) single to left and with two outs scored on Lofthouse's single to right.
UMSL tied the score with an unearned run in the home half of the second.
Lewis regained the lead scoring four times in the fourth. Weber put the Flyers ahead with a single to down the right field line and later in the inning Taylor drove in two runs with a double center.
Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) drove in the fourth run with a single down the right field line.
Lewis added two more in the fifth on a two-run home run from
Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn). The Flyers added their final run in the sixth on an RBI single from Brennan that scored Taylor.
Shaw and Sanders combined to hold the Tritons to just one run on hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Shaw went the first four innings to improve to 2-4 on the season while Sanders went the final three innings to earn her first save of the season.
Lewis rapped out 14 hits in the contest with Lofthouse leading the way with three. Beck, Kavalauskas, Shaw and Magaldi had two hits apiece.
The Flyers are back in action on Sunday taking on Maryville in a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
