Flyers Drop Two To Saints On Sunday

ST. LOUIS – Lewis' softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader at Maryville on Sunday 4-3 in 12 innings and 5-2. The Flyers fall to 9-13 overall and 2-2 in GLVC play while the Saints improve to 18-9 and 3-1 in GLVC action.

Game 1 – Maryville 4, Lewis 3 12 innings
Maryville jumped on top with three runs in its half of the third. With one out, Hannah Tolley reached safely on an infield single to third and scored on Bri Livingston's triple to right. Jaclyn Pasakarnis followed Livingston's triple with a two-run home run to left center.

Lewis got on the board with a run in the sixth. Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) led off the inning with a double to third, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball. Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) doubled later in the inning with two outs but was left stranded.

The Flyers tied the game with two runs in the seventh. Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) led off the inning with a double to center. Courtney Mahalik (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic), running for Swartzentruber, advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored on Sara Serena's (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) single to left.
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline), pinch hitting for Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn), singled to short to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Lofthouse lined out to short for the second out but on the play the Saints tried to throw behind the runner at second but it was offline and allowed Mahalik to score the tying run.

Lewis had a chance to take the lead in the 11th as Taylor led off the inning with a double to right center and moved to third on a groundout. She was left stranded there as Swartzentruber struck out and Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate) grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.

Maryville won the game in the bottom of the 12th. Tolley led off the inning with a double to right and then scored from second on a passed ball with one out.

The Flyers were outhit in the contest 11-9 and were led by Taylor with three while Swartzentruber, Serena, Shaw, Lofthouse, Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) had one hit each.

Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) got the start in the circle allowing three runs on six hits in three innings of work. Serena came on in relief to start the fourth and went the final 8.1 innings allowing an unearned run on five hits while striking out four and walking three.

Game 2 – Maryville 5, Lewis 2
Lewis grabbed the early lead with a run in the second inning on an error by the third baseman. It stayed that way until the when the Saints scored five runs on six hits to take the lead. Alyssa Callans had the big hit in the inning driving in two runs with a single to center. Shaina Kemtz added another two-run single later in the inning to cap the scoring.

The Flyers had a chance getting a run in the seventh on a fielding error and brought the tying run to the plate but Swartzentruber lined out to second to end the game.

Lewis was held to six hits in the contest with Shaw recording two of them and an RBI. Shaw also took the loss in the circle allowing five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts to fall to 2-5 on the season.

The Flyers open the home portion of their schedule on Thursday taking on Davenport in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
