ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' baseball team dropped its non-conference contest at Purdue Northwest, 7-5 on Thursday afternoon in Hammond, Ind. The Flyers, 9-14 on the season, hit three home runs in the contest.
Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) opened the scoring hit a solo home run to right with two outs in the first. The Pride, 5-13 on the year, tied the game with a run in their half of the first on a double from Raymond Hilbrich that plated Hunter Thorn.
PNW took the lead in the second on a 4-6-3 double play that scored Ray Hansen. Lewis regained the lead in the third on back-to-back solo home runs from
Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) and
Matt Verdun (Homer Glen, Ill./St. Rita) but the Pride tied the game with an unearned run in their half of the third.
The Flyers regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI single from
Alex Kiszkowski (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) which scored
Ryan Schefske (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East).
The score remained that way until the seventh when Purdue Northwest scored a pair of runs. Kevin McCune tied the game with a double play with the bases loaded and then Anthony Agne drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single.
Lewis tied the game in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Schefske to bring home Post.
The Pride retook the lead in the home half of the eighth on a triple off the bat of Nick Albanese to score Mike Woods. Albanese scored later in the inning on a throwing error by Schefske.
The Flyers had three chances to tie the game in the ninth but were unable too.
Lewis had eight hits in the contest with Post and Rutherford recording two each while Verdun, Schefske, Kiszkowski and
Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) had one each.
Mike Stevens (Homer Glen, Ill.) took the loss allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits in 0.2 innings of work.
Lewis begins an eight-game homestand on Sunday hosting McKendree in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Brennan Field.
