ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader to Drury on Sunday afternoon at Thompson Field in Springfield, Mo. The Flyers drop to 11-17 overall and 4-6 in the GLVC while the Panthers improve to 23-8, 6-2 GLVC.
Game 1 – Drury 6, Lewis 1
Lewis broke on top in the opener with a run in the first. With two outs in the inning
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) singled to right center to drive in
Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) with the first run of the contest.
Drury tied the game in the third on an RBI double from Jacy Ummel and a sacrifice fly from Serenity Healy.
The Panthers added to their lead scoring two more runs in the fourth on a two-run double off the bat of Madison Hecker. Drury tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on RBI doubles from Megan Holmes and Hecker.
The Flyers were held to six hits in the opener with recording two of them.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) took the loss allowing six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Game 2 – Drury 5, Lewis 3
The Panthers scored on an unearned run in the third to take a 1-0 lead. Lewis scored in the fourth on an RBI single from Kavalauskas that scored
Courtney Mahalik (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic), pinch-running for Shaw, to knot the score at 1-1.
Drury came right back with two runs in the fourth on a two-run double off the bat of Madoline Seumalo. The Panthers added two more in the fifth on a two-run homer off the bat of Kinzy Mathis.
The Flyers cut the Drury lead in half with a pair of runs in the sixth.
Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) drove in Kavalauskas and
Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate) with a two-run double to left center.
Lewis managed only three hits in the nightcap with Kavalauskas, Brennan and Swartzentruber recording one apiece. Shaw took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits with five strikeouts.
The Flyers return to the diamond on Monday traveling to Rolla, Mo., for a doubleheader against Missouri S&T starting at 12 p.m.
