ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader at Missouri S&T on Monday 7-5 and 9-1 in five innings at the S&T Softball Field in Rolla, Mo. The Flyers fall to 11-19 overall and 4-8 in the GLVC while the Miners improve to 10-22, 4-6 in the GLVC.
Game 1 Missouri S&T 7, Lewis 5
S&T jumped on top with a run in the second inning but Lewis came back to take the lead in the fourth with three runs.
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) singled home
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) with the first run and later in the inning
Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) drove in two runs with a single to right.
The Miners tied the game in the fourth with two runs and then scored three times in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead. The Flyers cut the lead to 6-5 in the sixth on back-to-back home runs from
Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate) and Swartzentruber.
S&T extended its lead to 7-5 with a run in its half of the sixth. Lewis brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh but
Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) lined into a double play and Taylor grounded out to short to end the game.
Swartzentruber and
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) had two hits apiece to lead the Flyers.
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) pitched the final two innings in relief of
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits to take the loss.
Game 2 Missouri S&T 9, Lewis 1 Five Innings
The Miners scored five runs on five hits and an error in the first inning of game two. Carley Hamman had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double to center.
Lewis got a run back in the second on Brennan's double to center to score Swartzentruber.
S&T added to its lead with three more in the third and one in the fourth for the run rule victory.
The Flyer offense was held to just two hits by Avery English. Brennan and
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) had a hit apiece.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in the losing effort.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday traveling to Indianapolis for a doubleheader against the Greyhounds beginning at 11 a.m.
