PRINCETON, N.J. – Lewis' men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to eight in a row with a 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-22) win at Princeton on Saturday evening. With the win, the Flyers improve to 15-4 while the Tigers drop to 10-9 on the season.
Lewis was outhit in the match .294-to-.275 but had the advantage in the service game with 10 aces against 11 errors while Princeton had eight aces and 19 errors.
Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School), the reigning MIVA Offensive Player of the Week, led the Flyer attack with 10 kills while
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) and
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) had seven kills apiece.
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) had 25 assists and was tied with
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) and Kyle Bugée with four digs each. Coenen had four aces while Bugée added three aces.
Lewis trailed by as many as five points in the opening set but came back thanks to a late run to take a 23-20 lead when Bugée and Mitchem stuffed Parker Dixon at the net to force the Tigers to call timeout.
Out of the break, Princeton scored the next two points to cut the Flyer lead to 23-22 but Lewis was able to close the set out after a timeout of its own. George Huhmann missed a serve to set up set point for the Flyers and then Bugée recorded his second kill of the set giving Lewis the 25-22 win.
The Flyers trailed by five again early in the middle set but once again rallied to tie and eventually take a 20-18 lead on a triple block by Mitchem, Coenen and Yoshimoto. The Tigers responded scoring four of the next five points to regain the lead at 22-21 on an ace by Greg Luck.
The two sides proceeded to trade points and Princeton still lead 24-22 and had two chances to win the set but Dixon committed a service error and an attack error to allow Lewis to tie it at 24. The Tigers regained the lead on a service error by Coenen but Lewis scored the final three points of the set to win 27-25. Moses gave the Flyers the lead and then Murray served an ace to win it.
Lewis led by as many as seven points in set three but the Tigers made things interesting with a 12-6 run to cut the Flyer lead to 23-22 after a bad set by Yoshimoto and forced Lewis to take a timeout. The Flyers were able to regroup as Bugée knocked home a kill to set up match point and then Bugée and Mitchem teamed up to block Huhmann at the net to end the match.
Dixon had 10 kills to lead the Tigers while Huhmann finished with eight kills while Joe Kelly had 27 assists and six digs.
Lewis concludes its Spring Break trip on Monday with a match at New Jersey Institute of Technology beginning at 6 p.m. (CDT).
