Grand Finale: Flyers Hit Two Grand Slams To Defeat Bellarmine 10-5

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's baseball team hit two grand slams to win the series finale against Bellarmine 10-5 on Sunday afternoon at Brennan Field. The Flyers took two of three from the Knights in the series to improve to 15-16 overall and 10-10 in GLVC play while Bellarmine drops to 19-16 and 10-10 GLVC.

"Great team win today," Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said. "I thought all phases of the game were on point and that's what you need to beat a good team in Bellarmine.

"Obiviously (Connor) Rutherford and Cavy's (Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick)) home runs were huge but I thought (Brandon) Post's at-bat's were big in setting those guys up," McDonough stated. "Michael O'Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) had a great game as well and it is good to see him going well."

The Knights jumped on top with a run in the first after the first two batters were retired. Zac Wiley worked a walk and went to second on Chris Gambert's single to left. Jared Mulcahy drove in Wiley with a single to left.

Bellarmine added to its lead with one out in the fourth on Tyler Neeley's solo home run to left.

Lewis had some missed opportunities leaving seven runners on base in the first five innings before breaking through in the sixth. The Flyers got their first run on a walk to Post with the bases loaded to drive in Matt McCauley (Oakville, Mo./St. John Vianney). Two pitches later, Rutherford put Lewis head with a grand slam to right center.

The Knights got a run back in the seventh on a walk, a wild pitch and two fly outs to the outfield to cut the lead to 5-3. They tied the score in the eighth on Matt Higgins' two-run homer to right.

Lewis answered in its half of the eighth plating five runs on three hits. O'Brien started the rally lining a double to left center with one out. Post followed with a single to center to drive in O'Brien with the go-ahead run. Post advanced to second on the throw home. Bellarmine intentionally walked Rutherford and then Ryan Schefske (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) walked to load the bases. Brandon Pfaadt came onto pitch for the Knights and Cavalieri greeted him by hitting the 2-1 offering to left center for his first home run of the season.

Ryan Ward (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the win.

The Flyers outhit Bellarmine 11-7 in the contest with Post, Rutherford, Cavalieri and O'Brien recording two hits each. Rutherford, Cavalieri and Post accounted for all of the RBIs.

Brad Littleton (Coal City, Ill./) got the start on the mound allowing three runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and five walks before handing it over to the bullpen. Andrew Tenison (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) pitched one inning allowing a run on a hit with a walk and a strikeout. Tyler Talbot (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) picked up the win throwing 0.1 IP allowing a run on a hit before handing it off to Ward.

"That was probably the best Brad has looked all year," McDonough said. "Tenny came in and did a great job getting out of the seventh. Ryan continues to be consistent force for us whether he starts or comes in relief."

Lewis returns to the diamond on Tuesday as it travels to Springfield, Ill., to take on Illinois Springfield in a single game beginning at 2 p.m.
