OZARK, Mo. – Lewis' baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit but fell to Quincy 5-4 in the GLVC Tournament opener for both clubs on Thursday (May 9) at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark, Mo. The Flyers fall to 27-23 while the Hawks improve to 31-16.
Quincy, the No. 1 seed, struck first with a run in the second inning. Joe Roscetti led off the inning with a double and went to third on a balk. He came into to score on TJ Tamaccio's ground out to third.
The Hawks added two more in the third on Michael Nielsen's two-run homer to right. They added an unearned run in the fourth to make it 4-0.
Lewis, the No. 8 seed, got a run back in the fifth. With one out,
Matt McCauley (Oakville, Mo./St. John Vianney) walked and went to second on a passed ball.
Michael O'Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) drove him in with a single down the right field line. The Flyers would eventually bring the tying run to the plate in the stanza but a pop up to center ended the inning.
Lewis evened the score with three runs in the seventh taking advantage of a pair of walks.
Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) drove in the first two runs with a double to left center.
Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) followed with a single to right drive in Post with the tying run. The Flyers had two chances to take the lead but a pop up and a strikeout ended the inning.
Quincy had an opportunity to regain the lead in the eighth with runners on second and third and one out but Tamaccio lined into an unassisted double play to O'Brien to end the inning. The Hawks scored the game-winning run in the ninth. Nolan Snyder led off the inning with a double to left center.
Robert Talarico (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) then struck out Chandler Purcell and intentionally walked Cody Birdsong to setup a double play. He got ahead of Nielsen 0-2 but Nielsen hit a 1-2 pitch off of
Austin Tittle's (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) glove that deflected down the right field line allowing Snyder to score the winning run.
Lewis was outhit in the contest 9-6 with Post, Cavalieri, O'Brien,
Ryan Schefske (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East),
Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence) and
Matt Verdun (Homer Glen, Ill./St. Rita) recording a hit apiece.
Pete Hamot (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) went the first seven innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Talarico took the loss allowing a run on two hits in 1.1 inning of work.
The Flyers will play the No. 5 seeded Drury Panthers in an elimination game on Friday (May 10) at 12:30 p.m. at U.S. Baseball Park. The Panthers lost to No. 4 seed Illinois Springfield 11-2 in the first game of the day on Thursday.
