Story Links

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis women's soccer team won its home opener over Purdue Northwest 2-1 on Wednesday evening at Lewis Stadium. Kailey Parnello's (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) goal in the 82nd minute to lifted the Flyers to 2-1 on the season. Lewis outshot the Pride 13-6 in the contest and 7-3 in shots on goal.

The Flyers held position for 56 percent of the first half and had several chances to break through. They finally did in the 22nd minute when Parnello won a ball in the midfield and played ahead to Allie Mikos (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) who got behind the defense and slid one past the keeper for her second of the season.

The score remained that way at the break with Lewis holding an 8-2 advantage in shots and put five on goal to just one for PNW.

The Pride evened the score in the 55th minute. Shonali Pierce took a shot from about 25 yards out that was saved by Bri Riscossa (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) but she couldn't control the rebound Sydney Hanson was there to put home the rebound.

Lewis scored the game winner with less than 10 minutes to play in the contest. Parnello ran down a long pass, made a couple of moves and fired a shot from the right edge of the box that beat the keeper over her outstretched hands for her second of the season.

Purdue Northwest had a couple of chances late but the Flyer defense stood firm and prevented the tying goal from being scored.

Lewis is back at home on Sunday, Sept. 15, taking on Illinois Springfield in the GLVC opener for both teams.
