ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University women's soccer team fell to Illinois Springfield 1-0 Sunday (Sept. 15) in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Opener for both teams at Lewis Stadium. The lone goal was scored on a penalty kick by Maggie Juhlin in the 29th minute.
The advantage in the first half went to UIS, who outshot the Flyers 5-3 and held a 3-1 corner kick advantage. The best chance for Lewis came 14:14 into the first half when
Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) notched a shot on goal. Just a couple of minutes later she recorded another shot, but it was blocked.
Lewis outshot UIS 4-1 in the second half and had a rush in the final minute of the game looking to tie the score. Parnello registered the lone shot on goal for either team in the half, which was saved and then an
Alissa Waits (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) shot was blocked to preserve the victory for the Prairie Stars.
Illinois Springfield moves to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in GLVC with the win, while Lewis drops to 2-2 overall, 0-1 in the GLVC. The Priarie Stars overcame 19 fouls in the contest to nine from the Flyers.
Next up for Lewis is a trip to St. Louis to take on Missouri-St. Louis Friday (Sept. 20) at 5 p.m.
