Emond’s Goal Gives Flyers First GLVC Win Of 2019

Story Links

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Payton Emond's (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) goal with five minutes left in the opening held up for the game-winner in Lewis' 2-1 win at Missouri-St. Louis on Friday evening at Dom Dallas Field. The Flyers improve to 3-2, 1-1 GLVC while the Tritons drop to 1-3, 1-1 GLVC.

Both sides had chances early in the contest but neither side scored until Allie Mikos (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) found the back of the net in the 18th minute. Maddie Levins (Elmhurst, Ill./York) played the ball into the box where Mikos was all alone and beat the keeper in the right corner for her team leading third goal of the season.

UMSL came right back and scored on the ensuing kick-off as Emily Hanewinkel scored into the upper left corner with assists from Abby Reeves and Rose Crabtree.

The game was delayed by roughly 90 minutes midway through the half due to a storm that blew through.

When the teams returned to the field the Flyers regained the lead on Emond's second career goal. Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) crossed the ball into the box and it hit off a defender and bounced right to Emond who put it into the open goal.

Lewis outshot the Tritons 7-3 in the first 45 minutes and put four shots on goal compared to two for UMSL.

The Tritons outshot the Flyers in the second half 9-3 but both sides had two shots on goal.

UMSL finished the game with a 12-10 edge in shots but Lewis held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Mikos led the offense with three shots while Christine Szymanski (Orland Park, Ill/Sandburg) and Karlie Cummins (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) had two shots apiece. Bri Riscossa (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) made three saves in goal to improve to 2-1.

The Flyers continue their roadtrip on Sunday taking on GLVC newcomer at Lindenwood at 12 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
