Lewis Men’s Soccer Blanks Tritons For Fifth Straight Win

Story Links

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Lewis' men's soccer team defeated Missouri-St. Louis 2-0 on Friday night at Dom Dallas Field for its fifth straight win to begin the season. The Flyers are 5-0 and 2-0 in GLVC play while the Tritons are 2-3 and 0-2 in the league.

Lewis scored the first goal in the second minute converting a penalty kick. Oliwer Mattiasson (Vanerborg, Sweden) began the play crossing it to the far side and Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) was hauled down in the box going for it. Mwanga converted from the spot for his second goal of the season.

The Flyers dominated the remainder of the half outshooting UMSL 10-2 and 3-1 in shots on goal but were unable to add to their lead.

Lewis continued its domination in the second half recording 10 more shots to just three for the Tritons. The Flyers added an insurance goal in the 82nd when Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) scored his first collegiate goal into the upper right corner with an assist from Alexis Robles-Ibarra (Harvard, Ill./Harvard).

Robles-Ibarra played a ball on the break across the box and Beaulieu beat the keeper before the two collided.

That would be all Lewis needed as UMSL was unable to muster anything on goal in the final eight minutes.

The Flyers outshot the Tritons 20-5, 9-2 in shots on goal and had a 12-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Lewis' defense posted its fourth shutout in five games.

The Flyers return to action in Sunday when they take on GLVC newcomer Lindenwood at 2:30 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
