Story Links

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Lewis' women's soccer team lead for virtually the entire game but Maryville scored with 0:03 left in regulation to force overtime as the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw at Maryville Field on Friday afternoon. The Saints (4-0-1, 3-0-1 GLVC) outshot the Flyers (3-3-1, 1-2-1 GLVC) 13-9 overall and 6-4 in shots on goal.

Lewis had the wind to its back in the first half and took advantage scoring in the 22nd minute. Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) won a ball in the midfield and played it ahead to Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) who got behind the defense for a breakaway and scored from 10 yards out into the lower left corner.

The Flyers finished the first half with a 4-0 advantage in shots but Parnello's was the only on goal.

Parnello had a chance to give Lewis a two goal lead early in the second half as she tried to beat the keeper to the lower right corner but her shot was saved.

The Saints turned up the pressure in the final 10 minutes of regulation taking five shots with four of those on goal but Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) was able to make the saves to keep the shutout intact.

Maryville had one final opportunity in the final seconds with a scrum in the box. The Flyers were unable to clear the ball and it fell to Amanda Kaltwasser who sent it in front of goal to Alex Johnson who scored from two yards out to tie the game and force the extra session.

The Saints had the only two chances in the first 10 minute frame with Johnson having a shot blocked and Kaltwasser had a shot saved with each coming in the last two minutes of the period.

Allie Mikos (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) had a chance to win the game for Lewis early in the second overtime but her shot was saved and then had another chance that went wide.

Maryville's Sammi Fulson had a chance to win the game with 1:15 to play but her shot went wide.

The Flyers were outshot in the second half and overtime periods by a 13-5 margin and 6-3 in shots on goal.

Lewis wraps up its four game roadtrip on Sunday as it travels to Rolla, Mo., to take on Missouri S&T at 12 p.m.
