Late Goal Sinks Flyers

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T scored with 5:26 left in regulation to defeat Lewis' women's soccer team 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Allgood-Bailey Stadium in Rolla, Mo. The Flyers fall to 3-4-1, 1-3-1 GLVC while the Miners improve to 2-4-1, 2-3 GLVC.

S&T struck first scoring in the 38th minute on an unassisted goal. Beth Roberts shot it into the upper right corner for her first goal of the season.

Each side had five shots in the first 45 minutes but the Miners put three of theirs on goal to just one for Lewis.

The Flyers got the equalizer in the 64th minute as Allie Mikos (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) found Courtney Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) who shot it past Kristin Steins from inside the box for her first goal of the season.

Lewis nearly took the lead in the 66th but Alissa Waits (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) shot was turned away by Steins preserving the tie.

S&T scored the game-winner in the 85th minute after a turnover deep in Lewis' end. Roberts crossed the ball into the box where Peyton Carter headed it in from the middle of the box for her second goal of the season.

The Flyers had a chance to even the score off the ensuing kick-off but Mikos' attempt was saved by Steins. Jamie Hansen (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) had another chance about 40 seconds later but once again Steins made the save.

Lewis dominated the second half on the stat sheet outshooting the Miners 9-1 and 7-1 in shots on goal.

The Flyers return home for the first of four beginning on Friday (Oct. 4) taking on Truman State at 5 p.m.
