Mattiasson’s Goal Gives Flyers 1-0 Win In Season Opener

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Oliwer Mattiasson's (Vanerborg, Sweden) goal in the 61st minute proved to be the difference in Lewis' 1-0 win over Purdue Northwest in the season opener for both clubs on Thursday evening at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers outshot the Pride 8-3 in the contest and 4-1 in shots on goal.

Possession was pretty even between the two sides in the opening half. Lewis had a great chance in the final 90 seconds of the frame when a loose ball fell to the foot of Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) but he wasn't able to get enough on the shot as Raul Garrido Garcia made the save.

The Flyers registered four shots in the opening half with Mwanga's being the only on goal.

The Flyers had a chance less than five minutes into the second half to break the deadlock but Abdul Ganiyu-Iddrisu's (Accra, Ghana/Eastern Florida State College) shot from about 20 yards out was saved by Garrido Garcia. PNW had a chance less than 30 seconds later that sailed wide.

Lewis broke through in the 61st minute. A foul was committed near midfield and the Flyers took a quick restart. Ganiyu-Idrisu played it ahead quickly to Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) who found Mattiasson open downfield. Mattiasson dribbled into the box and sent his shot across the goal mouth and inside the far post for his first collegiate goal.

The Pride had a chance to even the score in the 76th minute but Jaime Garcia's shot was blocked. They had another chance in the 88th minute but C.J. Couper (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) made a save on Grant Ugarte's attempt after a Lewis foul.

Jayson Iniguez (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport Township) had a chance to ice the game on a breakaway in the 89th minute but was denied by Garrido Garcia.

The Flyers are back in action on Sunday as they travel up to Somers, Wis., to take on former GLVC rival Parkside in a 2:30 p.m. contest at Wood Road Field.
