SOMERS, WIS. – Timm Adler's (Frankenthal Rheinland-Pfalz Germany/Karolinen-Gymnasium Frankenthal) goal in the 107th minute gave Lewis' men's soccer team a hard fought 1-0 win at Parkside on Sunday afternoon. The game was a physical one that had 30 fouls and 15 yellow cards combined between the two teams. The Flyers (2-0) were forced to play the final 25 minutes of regulation and both overtimes with nine players after having two players sent off.
Lewis scored the game-winner off a free kick from less than 25 yards with less than four minutes to play in the contest. Adler redeemed himself after missing a penalty kick in the 55th minute which would have put the Flyers in front. He curled the free kick into the upper right corner.
Parkside (1-1) had plenty of opportunities in the final 41 minutes but the Lewis defense held firm as
C.J. Couper (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) made seven saves and goal and the defense blocked multiple shots in the final 25 minutes of regulation.
The Rangers held a 19-12 advantage in shots but only 7-6 in shots on goal.
With the win the Flyers begin the season 2-0 for the first time since 2008.
Lewis is back in action on Thursday as it travels up to Marquette, Mich., to take on Northern Michigan at 3 p.m. (CDT).
