TIFFIN, Ohio – Kailey Parnello's (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) goal 0:27 into overtime lifted the Lewis women's soccer team to a 4-3 win at Tiffin on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers (1-1) led 3-1 late in the second but the Dragons (0-2) scored twice in the final 12 minutes to force the extra session.
Lewis struck first with a goal in the second minute when
Allie Mikos (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) scored with an assist from
Christine Szymanski (Orland Park, Ill/Sandburg). The Flyers added to their lead with a goal in the 18th minute with
Karlie Cummins (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) scoring off an assist from
Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian).
Tiffin cut the lead in half with a goal in the 24th minute with Sierra Besecker scoring with an assist from Claudia Santillan.
That's the way the first half ended with Lewis holding the one goal lead despite outshooting the Dragons 13-3.
The Flyers added to their lead with a goal in the 69th minute as
Mirandi Nirchi (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) scored her first goal with Lewis off an assist from
Maddie Levins (Elmhurst, Ill./York).
Tiffin cut the deficit to 3-2 on Lauryn Grcic's goal in the 79th minute with an assist from Besecker. The Dragons tied the game with less than two minutes to play on Leila Hannoui's goal with the assist credited to Santillan.
The Flyers scored the game-winner less than 30 seconds into overtime when Parnello scored her first of the season with Levins picking up her second assist of the day.
Lewis outshot Tiffin 31-7 in the contest and 16-3 in shots on goal. Parnello led the way with nine shots, three on goal, while Szymanski added five shots and put three on goal.
The Flyers return to the pitch on Wednesday hosting Purdue Northwest in their home opener beginning at 6 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
