Lewis Women’s Hoops Defeats William Jewell 70-63 For Fourth Straight Win

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team led wire-to-wire to pick up its fourth straight victory defeating William Jewell 70-63 on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 8-5, 5-0 GLVC while the Cardinals fall to 5-8, 1-4 GLVC.

Lewis got off to a good start hitting seven of their first 12 shots but was unable to gain any separation as William Jewell hit 6 of their first 11 shots to keep the game close. The Flyers extended their lead to eight behind six points from Alyssa Streeter (Chicago, Ill./Jones Prep) with 1:12 left in the opening quarter.

The Cardinals continued to hang around scoring the final four points of the quarter to cut Lewis' lead in half.

The Flyers opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to their biggest of the half at 31-18 on a jumper by Streeter. WJC cut the Lewis lead to 31-26 with eight straight points near the midway point of the frame.

The Flyers countered with a 7-2 run to extend their lead back to double digits on three-pointer from Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) with 2:02 remaining in the half. Kiara Bradley answered with a three on the other end before Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) made a layup to put Lewis in front by nine points at the half.

The Flyers doubled up the Cardinals to begin the third third quarter to build its largest lead of the game at 54-38 on a layup from Hinders. However, William Jewell scored the final six points of the stanza to cut Lewis' lead to 54-44 heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Flyers extended their lead to 14 early in the last frame but the Cardinals continued to scrap cutting the margin to eight with 2:16 to play. Lewis was able to seal the game by scoring six of the next eight points to push its lead to 70-58.

William Jewell scored five points in the final minute to cut the final margin to seven points.

The Flyers shot over 45 percent (26-for-57) from the field, was 5-of-16 from three and shot 77 percent (13-for-17) from the foul line. They outrebounded the Cardinals 35-27 and blocked eight shots.

Lewis had four players reach double figures in scoring in the contest led by Hinders with 20. Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) added 19 points while Streeter finished with 11 and Hilber had 10. Williams and Streeter both recorded career-highs in scoring. Hinders had eight rebounds and Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) finished with seven blocked shots.

Bradley led all scorers with 22 points and was joined in double figures by Ainsley Tolson with 14.

The Flyers begin a three-game road trip next Thursday traveling to Quincy to take on the Hawks at 5:30 p.m.
