No. 5 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Falls In Four Sets To No. 1 Hawaii

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's volleyball team fell to top ranked Hawaii in four sets on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill. The Flyers fall to 3-2 on the season while the Rainbow Warriors improve to 6-0.

The opening set featured 14 ties and one lead change. Lewis took control of the set thanks to an 8-3 run to build a 24-18 lead. Dalen Instenes (Racine, WI/William Horlick) had a pair of service aces in the run. Hawaii scored back-to-back points to cut the lead to four points before the Flyers closed out the set on a service error from Guilherme Voss to win 25-20.

The second set was just as tight with nine ties and three lead changes. The Rainbow Warriors were the ones to seize control this time with an 8-3 run to build a 23-18. Lewis fought back to within 23-21 on a kill from Ryan Van Loo (Burbank, CA/John Burroughs) but a triple block from Rado Parapunov, Max Rosenfeld and Chaz Galloway gave Hawaii set point at 24-21. After a timeout, the Flyers got a kill from Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) and then Van Loo, Coenen and Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) teamed up to block Parapunov to bring the Flyers within one and forced the Rainbow Warriors to take a timeout. Parapunov finished off the set with a kill to even the match at a set apiece.

Lewis fell behind to begin set three before responding with a 9-4 run to take a three-point lead. Kyle Bugée (Cupertino, CA, Homestead) had four of his five service aces in that run. Hawaii got back-to-back points to cut the deficit to 9-8 but the Flyers countered with a 7-1 run to build its largest lead of the match at 16-9 on a block from Instenes and TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS).

Lewis continued to hold a seven-point cushion when the Rainbow Warriors began to chip away at the deficit thanks to a 7-3 run to get within 22-19. The Flyers extended the lead back to four after service error but Hawaii rattled off five straight points to grab set point at 24-23 on a block by Filip Humler.

Lewis fought off the first set point after an error by Parapunov but couldn't take advantage as a service error and a block by Rosenfeld and Parapunov gave the Rainbow Warriors a 26-24 victory.

The Flyers trailed by as many as four points in the fourth set before making a late rally to get within 24-23 after a kill from Murray. That would be as close as they got though as Patrick Gasman hammered home a kill to end the match giving Hawaii the 25-23 victory.

Lewis hit .193 (44 kills, 21 errors, 119 total attempts) for the match. Coenen led the way with 12 kills while Bugée added 10 kills and five aces. Instenes had 12 digs while Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) finished with 18 assists.

The Rainbow Warriors finished the match with an attack percentage of .248 (49 kills, 19 errors, 121 total attacks) and were led by Parapunov with 22 kills. Jakob Thelle had 20 assists while Gage Worsley finished with 13 digs.

The Flyers return to the court on Saturday evening hosting No. 14 Penn State at 7 p.m. The Nittany Lions swept No. 12 Loyola on Friday evening.
