Flyers Extend Win Streak To Seven With 86-77 Victory At Illinois Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven and remained unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with an 86-77 win at Illinois Springfield on Monday evening. The Flyers are now 11-5 overall and 8-0 in the GLVC while the Prairie Stars fall to 6-10, 1-7 GLVC.

Lewis came out firing shooting over 71 percent (10-for-14) while holding UIS to just 3-of-15 shooting in the opening quarter. After the Prairie Stars tied the score at nine, the Flyers finished the quarter on a 16-0 run.

Lewis extended its lead to as many as 18 points with less than six minutes to play in the second quarter on a three-pointer from Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago).

UIS countered with an 15-5 run over the next four minutes to cut the Flyer lead to 41-33. The Flyers stretched the lead back to nine on a three-pointer from Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and a free throw from Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) with 1:05 left in the half.

The Prairie Stars scored five points in the final minute of the half to cut Lewis' lead to 45-41 at the intermission.

UIS scored on its opening possession of the third quarter but the Flyers answered with a 12-2 run to extend its lead to 57-45. The Prairie Stars wouldn't go away though scoring 12 of the final 16 points of the quarter to cut the Lewis lead to 61-57 by the end of the stanza.

The two teams went back and forth in the final quarter, but Lewis never relinquished its lead. UIS cut the lead to a point on two different occasions but each time the Flyers answered with a bucket.

Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) hit a big three with 4:06 remaining to extend the lead back to four and added two more key buckets in the final couple of minutes to keep the Prairie Stars at bay. Gardner scored 15 of her 17 points in the final 10 minutes on 6-of-7 shooting and was 2-for-3 from three.

Lewis was able to ice the game at the line hitting seven of its final eight attempts at the foul line.

The Flyers finished the contest shooting over 49 percent from the floor, were 10-of-22 from three, shot 80 percent at the foul line and outrebounded UIS 43-30. Hinders lead four players in double figures with a game-high 26 points. Gardner added 17, Williams finished with 14 and Glatczak finished with 10.

Malae Jackson and Lauren Ladowski led UIS with 14 points apiece.

Lewis begins a four-game homestand on Thursday hosting GLVC newcomer Lindenwood at 5:30 p.m. The Lions defeated Missouri-St. Louis, the Flyers opponent on Saturday, 92-86 in overtime on Monday.
