ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's seventh ranked men's volleyball team finished off a perfect weekend with a sweep of Charleston (W.V.) at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday evening. The Flyers improve to 5-3 while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-7.
Lewis used a 7-2 run midway through the opening set to break open a close match as it went onto win 25-15. The Flyers hit .455 in the stanza and were led offensively by
Kyle Bugée (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) with four kills while
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) and
Dalen Instenes (Racine, WI/William Horlick) added three kills each.
The second set featured 12 ties and three lead changes. Lewis closed the set scoring eight of the final 13 points to break a 17-all tie to win 25-22. Mitchem and
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) teamed up for nine of the team's 12 kills in the stanza.
The Flyers led for almost all of set three. They pulled away from Charleston with an 8-3 run to extend its lead to six points. The Golden Eagles wouldn't get closer than five points the rest of the match as Lewis prevailed 25-15.
The Flyers hit .368 (36 kills-8 errors-76 total attacks) and were led by Mitchem with 10 kills while Bugée added nine kills.
Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) dished out 31 assists and had three aces.
Marty Jepsen (Chicago, Ill./Marist High School) finished with seven digs.
Charleston had an attack percentage of .052 (26 kills-22 errors-77 total attacks) for the match. Jake Vorburger led the Golden Eagles with seven kills. Diego Villafane had 22 assists and nine digs.
Lewis heads to Fairfax, Va., next weekend for George Mason's UValdo Acosta Invitational. The Flyers will take on 2019 NCAA Tournament participant Barton on Friday at 4 p.m. (CST) and then will face the host Patriots on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CST).
