ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team picked up its third straight win Thursday night with an 85-74 win over Rockhurst at Neil Carey Arena. The win moved the Flyers to 7-5 overall, 4-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks fall to 6-5 overall, 1-3 in the GLVC.
Rockhurst held an 11-7 lead with 6:35 left in the first quarter, but the Flyers scored the final 12 points of the quarter behind six
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) points to lead 19-11 after one as the Flyers held the Hawks to 25 percent shooting (4-of-16).
Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) scored seven straight points for Lewis during a 9-3 run for Lewis midway through the second quarter as the Flyers extended their lead to 33-18 with 3:51 left in the first half. The Flyers led 39-30 at the half.
Lewis' defense continued to shine in the third quarter, not allowing a Rockhurst field goal for a 6:23 stretch as the Flyers went on an 11-3 run to give them their largest lead of the game of 56-39. It was 58-47 after three.
The Flyers maintained a double digit lead for much of the fourth quarter as the Hawks could get no closer than nine points the rest of the way, thanks to the Flyers shooting 76.9 percent from the floor (10-for-13).
Hinders had 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting, seven rebounds and five assists, while Gardner totaled a career-high 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) added 12 points and five assists, while
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) recorded 10 points.
Lewis shot 31-of-56 (55.4%) from the floor and 17-of-20 (85%) from the free throw line, while limiting the Hawks to 27-of-62 (43.5%) shooting. Lewis outrebounded Rockhurst 41-24.
The Flyers are back at home Saturday when William Jewell comes to Neil Carey for a 1 p.m. tip.
