FAIRFAX, Va. – Lewis' sixth ranked men's volleyball team defeated No. 12 George Mason in straight sets on Saturday evening in the Uvaldo Acosta Invitational at the Recreation Athletic Complex in Fairfax, Va. The Flyers improve to 7-3 while the Patriots drop to 4-4.
Lewis opened the contest scoring the first three points and never looked back on its way to a 25-18 win. The Flyers hit .393 (16 kills-5 errors-28 total attacks) in the stanza and were led by
Ryan Coenen's (Franklin, WI/Franklin) seven kills.
The middle stanza saw five ties and two lead changes. Lewis used a late run to seize a 25-21 win in the and take a commanding 2-0 lead. The Flyers hit nearly 47 percent in the frame recording 17 kills against three errors in 30 chances. Coenen again paced the offensive effort with seven kills in the stanza.
The final set was the tightest of the contest with 12 ties and five lead changes. Lewis trailed by as many as three in the frame before coming back. The two sides continued to go back-and-forth until late in the stanza when the Flyers took a 23-21 lead on a service error by Richie Huff. George Mason scored back-to-back points to even things up at 23 on a kill by Dam Greenslade.
Lewis got to match point first on a kill from
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) but the Patriots quickly tied it up after a service error. The Flyers got their second chance to close out the match on a GMU attack error and then sealed the victory when
Dalen Instenes (Racine, WI/William Horlick) and
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) teamed up to stuff Greenslade.
Lewis finished the contest hitting .437 (50k-12e-87ta). Coenen had a match-high 20 kills in the contest while Mitchem added 13 kills.
Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) handed out 44 assists and
Marty Jepsen (Chicago, Ill./Marist High School) finished with 11 digs.
The Patriots were held to an attack percentage of .205 (28k-12e-78ta). Greenslade GMU with eight kills while Hoff added seven and Brad Creamer finished with six. Ayrto Garcia-Jurado had 16 assists and Hoff finished with nine digs.
The Flyers return home on Friday (Feb. 7) to take on McKendree in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) opener for both squads at 7 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
