COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lewis' sixth ranked men's volleyball team bounced back with a sweep of No. 14 Ohio State on Thursday evening at the Covelli Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Flyers improve to 8-4, 1-1 MIVA while the Buckeyes fall to 8-4, 0-1 MIVA.
Lewis raced out to a five-point lead midway through the opening set but a 6-2 run by Ohio State cut the Flyer lead to 17-16 after an attack error by
Iñaki Bustamante (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union). Lewis responded with a 7-3 run of its own to extend its lead back to five at 24-19 after back-to-back kills from
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS).
The Buckeyes fought off three set points before the Flyers ended the set on a service error by Andrew Hillman to take the opener 25-22.
Lewis hit .458 in the set recording 15 kills against four errors in 24 chances. Mitchem led the Flyers with five kills while
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) added four kills.
Lewis built a seven-point lead late in the second set and didn't let Ohio State get closer than four on its way to a 25-17 victory. The Flyers hit .297 in the stanza with 15 kills against four errors in 37 attempts. Mitchem and Coenen combined for 10 of those kills.
Lewis used a 6-1 run early in the third set to break a 3-all tie and never looked back. The Buckeyes closed to within three at 10-7 but the Flyers answered with a 5-2 run to build a six-point cushion. OSU wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the way as Lewis six of the final eight points to win the set 25-17.
Coenen led the Flyers with 15 kills while Mitchem added 13 kills.
Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) handed out 33 assists, Mitchem had six blocks and
Kyle Bugée (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) led the way with eight digs. Lewis hit .416 (41 kills-nine errors-77 total attacks) in the contest.
The Buckeyes were led by Samuel Clark with eight kills while Hillman added six kills off the bench. Michael Wright handed out 19 assists and Luke Meidel had six digs. Ohio State was held to a .148 attack percentage (31 kills-19 errors-81 total attacks) in the contest.
The Flyers continue their road trip on Saturday traveling to Muncie, Ind., to take on Ball State at 6 p.m. (CST).
