ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' women's basketball team fourth quarter rally came up short in a 76-73 loss to Maryville on Thursday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers drop to 14-9, 11-4 GLVC while the Saints improve to 13-9, 8-7 GLVC.
Lewis trailed 72-61 with 2:39 remaining in the game after a basket by Mary Barton. The Flyers cut the deficit to four thanks to a three-pointer from
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic), a layup by
Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) on the break with an assist from Williams and a put back basket from
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) with 1:41 to play.
Barton put the Saints back up by six as she hit two free throws on the ensuing possession. After a missed shot, Lewis got the ball back on a 10 second violation with less than a minute to play.
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) made it a one-possession game hitting a three-pointer with 0:43 left.
Carly Graverson (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) stole the ensuing inbounds pass from Barton and scored on a layup with 0:34 remaining to make it a one-point contest.
Graverson again stole the inbounds again this time from UU Longs which resulted in a jump ball to keep it with the Flyers.
Lewis had a chance to win the game but turned it over with 2.5 seconds left to give the ball back to Maryville.
The Flyers were forced to foul and sent Barton to the line who hit two free throws with 0:00.8 left to extend the lead to 76-73.
Lewis had a chance to tie the game but Hinders three-pointer from just to the left of the top key rattled out at the buzzer.
The Flyers shot 45 percent (31-for-69) from the field, was 8-of-30 from three and shot 50 percent at the foul line. Hinders led three Lewis players in double figures with 18 points while Gardner finished with 15 and
Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) added 10.
The Flyers had no answer for Barton on the other end as she led all scorers with 33 points. She was joined in double figures by Jayda Jensen with 12 points while Abby Monis finished with 10 points.
The Saints shot 46.2 percent (30-for-65) from the floor, were 3-of-16 from three and shot 72 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded Lewis 40-to-34 in the contest.
Lewis continues its three-game homestand on Saturday hosting Missouri S&T at 1 p.m.
