No. 5 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Quincy For Third Straight Victory

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' fifth ranked men's volleyball team swept Quincy for its third straight win on Wednesday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 10-4, 3-1 MIVA while the Hawks drop to 4-10, 1-2 MIVA.

Lewis trailed 11-9 in the opening set before seizing control with an 8-2 run to build a four-point lead. Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) led the way for the Flyers with three kills in that run. Quincy got back to within 17-15 but that was the closest it got as Lewis closed out the set by scoring eight of the last 10 points to win 25-17.

Mitchem had five kills in the stanza while Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) added four kills and two service aces and TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) finished with three kills.

The middle set featured 17 ties and seven lead changes. The Hawks led by three midway through the set but the Flyers responded with a 9-5 run to take a 21-20 lead after an attack error by Omari Wheeler. Quincy quickly evened it back up on a kill from Eddie Jakubauskas but Lewis regained the lead on a kill by Mitchem and a ball handling error by Adam Meyer to take a 23-21 lead.

The Hawks wouldn't go away getting back-to-back kills from Michael Ladner to even things at 23. Coenen put the Flyers back in front with a kill and then Murray and Dalen Instenes (Racine, WI/William Horlick) teamed up to block Ladner to give Lewis a 25-23 victory in the set.

The Flyers dominated the third set hitting .520 while holding Quincy to a negative .118 attack percentage. Lewis used an early 5-2 run to extend its lead five points and then later in the frame went on a 9-1 run to take its largest lead of the match at 24-9 on a kill from Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley). The Hawks fought off two set points before Coenen ended the match with a kill.

The Flyers finished the match with an attack percentage of .411 (48 kills/11 errors/90 total attacks). Mitchem led the way with a match-high 15 kills while Coenen added 10 kills. Kauling had 40 assists and Jason Gibbs (Bellaire, Texas/Bellarie) finished with nine digs.

Quincy hit .127 for the contest recording 25 kills against 15 errors in 79 chances. Ladner led the Hawks with eight kills while Wheeler added six kills. Yoran Raymaekers handed out 21 assists and Noam Hannoun had a match-high 14 digs.
