CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Lewis' baseball team dropped the finale of its season opening three game series at Lee 13-4 at Olympic Field in Cleveland, Tenn., on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers drop to 1-2 while the Flames move to 8-5.
"We had a tough start to the game today and weren't able to recover," Lewis head baseball coach
Tim McDonough said. "Give credit to Lee for taking it to us offensively and capitalizing on walks and errors.
"We definitely learned a lot from this weekend being the first time we've been outside," McDonough stated. "Bottom line is we have to throw more strikes and compete better in the batter's box and bring a tougher mindset to the field."
Lee scored four runs on two hits and two errors in its half of the first. Ryan Beamish had the big hit in the inning driving in two with a double right.
The Flames added three more runs in the second highlighted by Alan Smith's double down the left field line.
Lewis got on the board in the third scoring all three runs on
Ryan Schefske's (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) three-run homer to left that scored
Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) and
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice).
Lee added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend its lead to 9-3.
The Flyers got a run back in the sixth on
Austin Tittle's (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) ground out to third that drove in
Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence).
The Flames added two runs in the sixth on Justen Freeman's home run to left and two more in the seventh on another RBI double from Beamish and an RBI single from Dylan Standifer.
Cavalieri finished the game going 3-for-3 with a walk. Preusser, Schefske, Rios and
Dalton Crowder (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) had a hit apiece in the contest.
Matt Verdun (Homer Glen, Ill./St. Rita) took the loss allowing seven runs, six earned, on five hits with a strikeout and a walk in two innings pitched.
