ROMEOVILLE, ILL. – Lewis' men's lacrosse team defeated Davenport 13-6 on Saturday afternoon at Lewis Stadium to remain unbeaten at home. With the win the Flyers improve to 2-2 while the Panthers fall to 0-3.
Lewis had eight different scorers' in the contest, with
Karl Flinter (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) leading the pack with three goals while
Xan Brouillet (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial),
Nolan Dalep (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School), and
Thomas Purfeerst (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) contributed two goals apiece.
Davenport struck first scoring three minutes into the contest, but
Luke Majewski (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) responded two minutes later to even the game.
Peter Carlson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) put the Flyers in front with an unassisted goal with 5:09 left in the opening quarter and Flinter scored his first of the contest at 2:57 mark to make it a two-goal lead.
The Panthers scored two quick goals in the first four-plus minutes of the second quarter to tie the score at three, but Lewis responded scoring four straight goals to regain the lead. Dalep put the Flyers back in front 66 seconds after the tying goal. Flinter scored his second goal of the contest to extend the lead and then Purfeerst and
Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) added goals in the final three minutes of the half to give Lewis its largest lead of the half.
Davenport cut the lead to 7-4 at the half on Blake Gibson-McDonald's goal in the final seconds of the half.
Gibson-McDonald scored 3:35 into the third quarter to cut the Flyer lead to 7-5.
Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) responded less than a minute later to put Lewis back up by three, but Keelan McKouen made it a two-goal game with 4:18 left in the quarter. Dalep scored on the man-up less than three minutes later and then Brouillet scored in the final minute of the quarter to put the Flyers ahead 10-6 heading into the final period.
Broulliet scored again 0:16 into the final quarter with an assist from Kask to extend the lead to five. Flinter scored 1:19 later on the man-up with an assist from Purfeerst to make it 12-6. Purfeerst added another goal at the 9:44 mark for the final tally.
Lewis outshot the Panthers 42-to-35 in the contest with 27 of those on goal to 18 for Davenport. The Flyers were 4-for-8 on the extra-man opportunity and caused 10 turnovers in the contest.
Peter Carlson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) was 13-for-21 in the face-off circle and picked up 14 ground balls. Flinter and Carlson caused two turnovers apiece.
Josh Calvin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame College Prepatory HS) made 12 saves in goal.
Lewis concludes its homestand on Friday (March 6) against Felician at 4 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
