PALO ALTO, Calif. – Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) matched his career-high with 23 kills in No. 5 Lewis' 3-1 win at No. 13 Stanford on Saturday evening in Palo Alto, Calif. The Flyers won their eighth straight and improve to 15-4 on the year while the Cardinal fall to 6-11.
The opening set was tied at 16 when Lewis took control closing the set on a 9-2 run to win 25-18. Coenen recorded six of his kills in the opening set while
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) and
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) added three kills apiece.
The Flyers hit .433 in the first stanza recording 15 kills against two errors in 30 chances while holding Stanford's offense to a .071 attack percentage (8 kills/6 errors/28 total attempts).
Lewis trailed by as many as five in the second set but battled back to get within 22-21 after a block by Murray and
Ryan Van Loo (Burbank, CA/John Burroughs). However, the Cardinal scored three of the final four points to win the set 25-22 and even the match at a set apiece.
The Flyers trailed 15-11 midway through set three before going on a 13-5 run to take a 24-20 lead on a kill by Coenen. Stanford fought off three set points as Eric Beatty recorded back-to-back kills to cut the Lewis lead to 24-23. Beatty tried to tie the set at 24 but was denied at the net by Mitchem and
Dalen Instenes (Racine, WI/William Horlick) to give the Flyers the 25-23 victory.
Lewis led by as many as five in set four but had to withstand a late Cardinal rally. Stanford used a 6-2 run to get within 24-23. Will Rottman had a pair of kills in that run. The Cardinal served with a chance to tie the set but Instenes was able to terminate a ball to give the Flyers a 25-23 victory.
Lewis finished the match with a .374 hitting percentage and recorded 52 kills against 12 errors in 107 swings. Coenen finished with a match-high in kills and was joined in double figures by
Kyle Bugée (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) with 10 kills. Van Loo had 22 assists while Coenen finished with eight digs. The Flyers recorded 11 total team blocks in the contest and were led by Mitchem with eight total blocks.
Stanford had an attack percentage of .221 (50 kills/23 errors/122 total attacks) for the match. Jaylen Jasper and Rottman finished with 18 and 14 kills respectively. Nathan Lietzke handed out 44 assists while Justin Lui had a match-high 11 digs. The Cardinal had 10 total team blocks in the contest and were led by Stephen Moye with six total blocks.
Lewis concludes its three-match road trip next Friday (March 13) as it travels up to Gentile Arena to take on Loyola at 7 p.m.
