ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's fifth ranked men's volleyball team swept Queens University of Charlotte on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena to improve to 2-0 on the season while the Royals dropped to 1-3.

The opening frame was tied at six when Lewis seized the lead for good with a kill from TJ Murray (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS). That kill sparked a 6-3 run for the Flyers. Queens got back to within 15-14 on a kill from TJ Payne but that would be the closest it got as Lewis closed the set scoring 10 of the final 15 points to win the opener 25-19.

The second set saw four ties and a lead change early before the Flyers began to pull away thanks to a 6-2 run. The Royals got back to within 14-12 after a kill from Payne but just like the opening stanza Lewis pulled away late scoring 11 of the final 18 points to win 25-19 and take the commanding 2-0 lead.

The Flyers came out flying in set number three scoring the first seven points of the frame as they led by as many as 10 in the stanza. Queens cut the deficit to 20-15 after a service error from Iñaki Bustamante (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union). Lewis closed strong outscoring the Royals 5-3 the rest of the way to take the finale 25-18.

The Flyers finished the contest hitting .432 recording 38 kills against six errors in 74 attempts. Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) led the way with 15 kills and four aces while Murray and Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) added six kills each. Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) dished out 33 assists and Coenen and Cole Brillhart (York, Pa./Northeastern) had six digs apiece.

Lewis' defense held Queens to a .183 hitting percentage with 28 kills against 15 errors in 71 attempts. Tristan Santoyo led the Royals with 12 kills. Daniel Leitao added 24 assists and finished with a match-high seven digs.

The Flyers conclude their season opening three-match homestand on Saturday hosting Lincoln Memorial at 7 p.m. The Railsplitters dropped a four-set match at Loyola Chicago on Friday evening.
