SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team tied the game in the 87th minute but gave up the go-ahead goal 1:22 later in its 2-1 loss at Illinois Springfield on Friday evening in Springfield, Ill. The Flyers fall to 4-3-2, 2-3-1 GLVC while the Prairie Stars improve to 6-3, 5-1 GLVC.
The game was scoreless until the 39th minute when Albert Nimako scored into the lower right corner with an assist from Marvin Zott to put UIS in front.
It remained that way until the 87th minute. The Prairie Stars' Morgan Ratcliffe committed a foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick for Lewis.
Justin Darlage (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) converted the PK for his first goal of the season to level the match.
UIS came right back 82 seconds later as
Ayden Henegar (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) was called for a foul in the penalty area resulting in a penalty kick for the Prairie Stars. Browel Some stepped up to the spot and scored to give UIS the lead back.
The Flyers had two chances in the final 75 seconds as
Arturs Gorodnickis (Riga, Latvia/Riga) missed a shot wide left off a corner kick and then
Charles Carlback (Karlskrona, Sweden/FK Karlskrona) had a chance in the final seconds that was saved by Pijus Petkevicius.
Lewis was outshot in the contest 13-10 including 6-4 in shots on goal. Each side took five corner kicks in the contest.
Gorodnickis and
Godwin Asore (Kumasi, Ghana/Putnam Science Academy) led the Flyers with two shots apiece while
Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg) made four saves in goal.
The Flyers are back at home next Friday (Oct. 8) hosting Truman State at 3 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
