SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Lewis University's women's soccer team wrapped up its three-game road trip with a 1-0 win at Illinois Springfield on Friday evening in Springfield, Ill. The win also snapped the Flyers winless streak at two and improved them to 5-1-2, 3-1-2 GLVC while the Prairie Stars drop to 5-3-1 and 3-3 in the GLVC.
Lewis scored its goal in the ninth minute as
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) sent a cross into the box and
Melisa Hadzic (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) was able to score into the lower right corner for second goal of the season and second game-winner.
UIS had a chance in the 16th minute as Allison Hackett got free in the penalty area for a shot but it missed high. The Prairie Stars had another chance later in the half but Bri Wade's shot towards the lower right corner was saved by
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England).
UIS had a 6-3 edge in shots during the first 45 minutes and put three of those on goal to just one shot on goal for the Flyers.
Lewis had a chance early in the second half to extend its lead but Havelka-Vanderplow missed her shot over the bar.
The Prairie Stars had three chances at the equalizer in the span of 3:21 but Clark was there each time to make the save.
The Flyers had another chance to extend their lead in the 81st minute but
Raina Spencer's (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) shot was saved by Allison Mirimanian.
UIS outshot Lewis 17-9 including 7-3 in shots on goal in the contest. The Prairie Stars also had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
Clark made a season-high seven saves to pick up her fifth shutout of the season. Hadzic and
Faith Lewis (Corunna, Ind./DeKalb) led the Flyers with three shots apiece in the contest.
Lewis is back at home next Friday (Oct. 8) evening taking on Truman State at 5:30 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
