ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's 14th ranked women's volleyball team swept Maryville for its sixth straight win on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers move to 11-3, 6-0 GLVC while the Saints drop to 4-8, 0-5 GLVC.
Maryville led by as many as five points at 10-5 in the opening set before Lewis stormed back closing the set on a 20-3 run to take the opener 25-13. The Flyers hit .400 in the stanza recording 17 kills against three errors in 35 swings and were led by
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) with seven kills while
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) added five and
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) finished with three kills.
The middle frame featured eight ties and four lead chances and was tied at 13 when Lewis ran off five points in a row to take an 18-13 lead on back-to-back kills from Venema. The Saints wouldn't get closer than four the rest of the set as the Flyers scored six of the final eight points to take the set 25-17.
Lewis opened the final stanza by scoring the first six points of the set but Maryville refused to go away cutting the Flyer lead to 13-11 on an ace from Regina Elguezabal. Lewis finished the match strong doubling the Saints 12-6 the rest of the way to complete the sweep with a 25-17 victory.
The Flyers hit .390 for the contest recording 50 kills against 11 errors in 100 chances and were led by Van Loo with 13 kills while Schlechte and Venema added eight kills apiece and
Amanda Greening (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) finished with seven kills.
Lauren Stenman (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) handed out 39 assists,
Bella Ray (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic) had four blocks and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) finished with 14 digs.
Lewis' defense held Maryville to .053 attack percentage with 23 kills against 18 errors in 95 swings. Abbie Schnell, Ashlyn Clayton, Makenna Braumann and Mikaela Kues had four kills apiece to lead the Saints. Schnell finished with 18 assists and Elguezabal and A.J. Hallemann finished with eight digs each.
The Flyers continue their homestand on Saturday afternoon hosting Lindenwood at 3 p.m.
