KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Lewis University's women's soccer team shutout Rockhurst 2-0 on Friday evening at Bourke Field in Kansas City, Mo. The win snapped an 11-game winless streak against the Hawks and was the Flyers (6-3-2, 4-3-2 GLVC) first ever win at Bourke Field. They entered Friday's contest 0-8-1 all-time against the Hawks (3-8-2, 2-5-2 GLVC) at Bourke Field.
Rockhurst controlled position in the first 45 minutes outshooting Lewis 10-4 including 6-2 in shots on goal but the Flyers were able to go into halftime scoreless thanks to
Lucy Clark's (Bristol, England) six saves in goal.
Lewis scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half to break the deadlock.
Raina Spencer (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) scored the game-winner 1:34 into the stanza as she converted a cross from
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) with a left footed shot from five yards out for her first collegiate goal.
Faith Lewis (Corunna, Ind./DeKalb) added an insurance goal 2:35 later when she stole the ball and scored on a shot with her right foot from 16 yards out for her second goal of the season.
The Hawks had a chance to cut the Flyer lead in a half a minute later but Clark denied Olivia Schwarzen's chance.
Rockhurst had another chance in the 60th minute but once again Clark was there to make the save.
The Hawks had three more chances in the final 20-plus minutes but Clark made all three saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season and finished with a career-high 11 saves.
Lewis was outshot in the contest 18-9 including 11-3 in shots on goal. Havelka-Vanderplow and Lewis led the Flyers with three shots apiece while
Marsela Rosales (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) had two shots.
Gabby Hennessy led Rockhurst with five shots and put all five on goal.
Lewis returns to the pitch on Sunday afternoon as it travels to Liberty, Mo., to take on William Jewell at 12 p.m.
