HAMMOND, Ind. – Lewis University's 16th ranked women's volleyball team bounced back from two losses on Friday with a sweep of Northwood on Saturday afternoon at the Midwest Region Crossover at the Hammond Sportsplex in Hammond, Ind. The Flyers improve to 15-6 while the Timberwolves fall to 10-7.
Lewis broke open a tight first set with a 9-5 run midway through the stanza to extend its lead from 9-7 to 18-12 after an attack error from Kiana Martens. Northwood wouldn't get any closer than six points the rest of the way as the Flyers closed the set strong scoring seven of the final nine points to win the stanza 25-15 on a kill from
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs).
The Flyers trailed 7-1 to begin the middle stanza but fought back to get within 18-15 after a service from
Ally Hickey (Granger, Ind./Penn). The Timberwolves extended their lead to 24-20 and were on the verge of evening the match at a set apiece before Lewis scored the final six points of the set to win 26-24. Van Loo scored the Flyers final six points of the frame with six kills.
The final stanza was tied at six when Lewis seized control with a 6-0 run behind four aces from
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) and a kill from
Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West). Northwood got as close as three at 15-12 after a kill from Olivia Ott before the Flyers put the match away with a 7-1 run to build its largest lead of the set at 20-13 on a kill from Van Loo. Lewis proceeded to close it out winning when Ott's service attempt went into the net.
The Flyers concluded the contest hitting .367 with 51 kills against 11 errors in 109 chances and had five total blocks. Van Loo finished with a match-high 20 kills while
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) added 11 kills and Stefanski finished with eight kills.
Lauren Stenman (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) handed out 44 assists and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) had a match-high 21 digs. Venema finished with four total blocks.
Lewis' defense held Northwood to a .200 hitting percentage (33 kills/12 errors/105 total attacks). Sydney Sweet, Al'Lesha Roberts and Grace Rekeweg had seven kills apiece. Macy Lintz finished with 26 assists while Lauren Bell had 12 digs.
The Flyers begin their final homestand of the season next Saturday (Oct. 23) hosting UIndy at 3 p.m.
