LIBERTY, Mo. – Lewis University's men's soccer team extended its winning streak to a season-high four matches with a 4-1 win at William Jewell on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers improve to 8-3-2, 6-3-1 GLVC while the Cardinals fall to 2-11, 2-9 GLVC.
Lewis controlled the action for the first 30 minutes of the contest taking nine shots and scoring all three of its first half goals in that time frame.
Arturs Gorodnickis (Riga, Latvia/Riga) got the Flyers on the board following a missed shot from
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) and scoring off the rebound from four yards out for his third goal of the season with the assist to Mwanga. 27 seconds later Mwanga was fouled in the penalty area by Blayne Chapman resulting in a penalty kick.
Justin Darlage (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) stepped up to the spot and buried it for his second goal of the season.
12 minutes later
Edrik Padilla (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) got in on the scoring action as he received a pass from
Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) and dribbled down the left side, cut it in and scored from eight yards out for his first collegiate goal.
William Jewell got a goal back in the 36th minute. Lewis'
John Fitzgerald (Overland Park, Kan./Olathe East) was given a yellow card on a foul near the edge of the penalty area. Cole Bulgren took the free kick and curled it into the upper left corner for his second of the season.
The Cardinals appeared to cut the Flyer lead to 3-2 a few minutes later but the goal was disallowed for offsides.
Lewis had a 10-3 advantage in shots including 7-2 in shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.
The Flyers added an insurance goal in the 78th minute when
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) scored from the left side from 10 yards out for his team leading sixth goal of the season with an assist from Darlage.
Lewis finished the contest with an 18-7 advantage in shots including 13-4 in shots on goal and had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Mwanga led the Flyers with five shots, three on goal, while Baumann and
Godwin Asore (Kumasi, Ghana/Putnam Science Academy) had three shots on goal apiece.
Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg) made three saves in goal.
Lewis returns home on Friday (Oct. 22) hosting Drury at 3 p.m. at Lewis Stadium in its final homestand of the regular season.
