ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team played to scoreless double overtime draw against Drury on Friday afternoon. The Flyers are now 8-3-3, 6-3-2 GLVC while the Panthers are 7-4-3, 7-1-3 GLVC.
The first half of the game started fast paced with both
Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) and
Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) attempting shots on goal within the first three minutes of the game. Shortly after Drury had two shot attempts on goal, both however, were saved by
Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg).
The Panthers attempted another shot in the eighth minute that went high over the goal.
In the 10th minute, Beaulieu attempted a shot that missed wide left.
Drury and Lewis each attempted three shots in the first half.
Doppelhofer contributed two saves in the first half keeping the game scoreless at half.
The second half of the game started off similarly to the first half with
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) attempting a shot on goal in the 46th minute but the Panthers' Yannick Lamers came up with the save deflecting it with his leg.
The game remained back and forth until the 71st minute when
Joshua Kieldyk (Schleswig-Holstein, Germany/Bundesliga Junior-A Eimsbutteler) attempted a shot that sailed right.
Drury attempted another shot five minutes later that was saved by Doppelhofer.
Neither team was able to break through in the first 90 minutes so the game headed to overtime.
The Panthers had a scoring opportunity halfway through the first overtime period but Doppelhofer was there to make the save.
The second overtime went similarly to the first, with the teams trading possession back and forth. Drury had an attempt in second overtime to win the game in the 103rd minute but the shot was stopped by Doppelhofer.
Drury outshot Lewis 6-5 in the contest including 5-2 in shots on goal. The Flyers were led offensively by Beaulieu with two shots while Mwanga, Oluwatuyi and Kieldyk had a shot each. Doppelhofer made five saves to post his fourth shutout of the season.
Lewis hosts Southwest Baptist on Sunday (Oct 24) afternoon at 2:30 p.m., in its final home game of the regular season. The Flyers will honor their nine seniors after the women's game against SBU.
