ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to six with a 2-0 victory over Southwest Baptist on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers improve to 9-3-3, 7-3-2 GLVC while the Bearcats drop to 1-13, 1-11 GLVC.
Lewis opened the scoring in the eighth minute when
Matt Budreck (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) played a ball forward to
Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) who got behind the defense and beat Willy Lusansu for his third goal of the season.
The Flyers had several other chances but were unable to capitalize on them until
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) scored an unassisted goal in the 44th minute for his team leading seventh goal of the season.
Lewis finished the first 45 minutes with a 9-1 advantage in shots including 6-1 in shots on goal. The Flyers also had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Lewis had four really good chances in the first 15 minutes of the second half but were unable to add on as Lusansu stopped all four shots to keep SBU within striking distance.
The Flyers finished the game with a 17-1 advantage in shots, 11-1 in shots on goal and had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) led Lewis with six shots while Oluwatuyi added four and
Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) had two.
Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg) stopped the only shot he faced for his fifth shutout of the season.
Lewis finished its home schedule with a 6-1-2 record this season.
The Flyers return to action on Friday (Oct. 29) as they travel to St. Louis to take on ninth ranked Maryville at 12 p.m.
