ST. LOUIS – Lewis University's men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to seven upsetting 10th ranked Maryville 2-1 on Friday (Oct. 29) afternoon at the Maryville Soccer Field in St. Louis, Mo. The Flyers improve to 10-3-3, 8-3-2 GLVC while the Saints drop to 12-3-1, 10-3 GLVC.

Lewis took the early lead with a pair of goals in the first five-plus minutes. Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) scored the first goal in the fourth minute taking a shot from the left wing that deflected off the goalkeeper's hands and rolled into the goal for his fourth goal of the season.

Oluwatuyi added his second goal two minutes later. The Flyers won a free kick from 30 yards and Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) put it on goal forcing Nick Hemann to make a save. Hemann couldn't control the rebound and Oluwatuyi was there to knock home the rebound for his fifth goal of the season.

Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg) made two big saves in the final 15 minutes of the first half to keep Lewis in front. Mirza Hasecic had a chance in the 31st sending a shot to the upper right corner but Doppelhofer was able to get a hand to it and deflect it over the bar for a corner kick. He robbed Cedric Sengl's goal scoring opportunity in the 33rd minute getting his body on it and deflecting it out for a corner kick.

The Flyers had a 9-4 advantage in shots including 5-2 in shots on goal. Maryville had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks and were whistled for eight fouls to four for Lewis.

Doppelhofer came up big again in the 57th minute when Victor DeGiorgio got free in the middle of the box and sent a shot towards the lower left corner but Doppelhofer was able to reach behind him and make the save.

The Saints got on the board in the 58th minute on an own goal when the Flyers tried to clear the ball but misplayed it and deflected into the goal.

Cristian Perez (Cicero, Ill./Morton East) had a chance to make it 3-1 in the 76th minute but his shot was blocked by a Maryville defender.

The Saints had three corner kicks in the span of 0:35 in the last three minutes but were unable to get a shot at goal.

Maryville outshot Lewis 7-1 in the second half including 3-0 in shots on goal to finish the game with an 11-10 edge in shots. Both teams had five shots on goal. The Saints had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks in the contest.

Godwin Asore (Kumasi, Ghana/Putnam Science Academy) led the Flyers with three shots while Oluwatuyi and Baumann added two shots each. Doppelhofer made five saves in goal for Lewis.

The Flyers wrap up the regular season on Sunday afternoon taking on Missouri S&T in Rolla, Mo., at 2:30 p.m.
