ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's soccer team wrapped up the home portion of its 2021 schedule with a 4-2 win over Southwest Baptist on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers improve to 9-3-2, 7-3-2 GLVC while the Bearcats drop to 2-11-1, 2-10 GLVC.

Southwest Baptist opened the scoring with a goal six minutes into the contest. Rachel Wolecki crossed a ball to Raegan Edwards who hit a shot from the edge of the penalty area into the upper left corner for her fourth goal of the season.

Lewis tied the game five minutes later when Miranda Nirchi (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) sent a cross into the box and Elisa Aguilar (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) was on the other end sending a low liner into the lower right corner for her second goal of the season.

The Flyers took the lead 2:53 later when Faith Lewis (Corunna, Ind./DeKalb) headed home a corner kick from Nirchi for her fourth goal of the season.

Lewis dominated the stat sheet in the first 45 minutes outshooting the Bearcats 11-2 including 7-2 in shots on goal. The Flyers had five corner kicks to two for SBU.

The Bearcats tied the game 10 minutes into the second half when Wolecki played a ball ahead to Maya Cofield who shot it over Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) into the goal for third of the season.

Lewis had a chance to retake the lead 70 seconds later when Melisa Hadzic (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) was pulled down in the penalty area for a penalty kick. Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) missed the penalty wide right to keep the game knotted at two.

The Flyers regained the lead about two minutes later when Nirchi scored her second goal of the season redirecting home a cross from Hadzic and Havelka-Vanderplow.

Havelka-Vanderplow added an insurance goal in the 86th minute. Caitlin Shanahan (Orland Park, Ill/Providence) played the ball ahead to Havelka-Vanderplow who beat her defender and fired a shot from the right wing that bounced in front of the keeper and through her hands for fifth goal of the season.

Lewis outshot SBU 18-3 in the contest including 10-3 in shots on goal. The Flyers had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Havelka-Vanderplow led the way with four shots while Hadzic, Nirchi and Aguilar each had three shots in the contest for Lewis.
